September… What a great month!  It launches the last 4 months of the year by showing off many changes. Our children have returned to school and are adjusting to their new learning environments. The climate is changing from summer to fall in the northern hemisphere and winter to spring in the southern hemisphere. World-wide vacation time has come to a close and industry is cranking up the engines for a run to the finish line.

Change is a constant reminder of opportunity. As companies review their bench strength to get to the finish and insure a fast start to the upcoming year, there is excitement in the air for candidates ready to make a change.

Foundations are being built for tomorrow. How ready are you as a company to retain your best people and make changes where necessary? How willing are you to create a strategy to insure your top selections don’t get lost in a time warp?

As potential hires, how ready and available are you as a candidate? Is your house in order?  Resume written, references lined up, success stories reviewed, accomplishments noted, companies targeted, culture identified, and suit cleaned and pressed? 

On both sides of the process, have you taken a realistic look at salaries, cost of relocation, benefits, schedules, non-compete language, and the skills necessary to survive in today’s world? Have you looked at and considered what changes you may need to make to stay competitive? Have you set aside the time and reserved the energy to make change happen?

The actions of many companies over the past several years have created the greatest desire for workplace change ever. For those companies willing to adjust their cultures and environments to the changing wants and needs of the workforce, there is a great opportunity to hire some of the smartest and most talented people. No longer will a job be the only criteria. Your new talent will want to see a return on their investment of time and intelligence that includes fair wages, mutual respect, open two way communications, creativity, corporate values, ethical behavior, career paths, and more. Hiring and retaining today’s impact players and tomorrow’s leaders is the responsibility of today’s management.
