Competing For Impact Players

We speak with hundreds of candidates each and every week. Almost every hour of every day we hear about multiple offers and the decision processes top performers are using. What may surprise most of you is that it’s not the money that gets the best performers. In some cases it certainly is, but not in all of them. More often we are hearing about the lack of responsiveness from the hiring companies, elongated interview cycles, indecisive behavior patterns, and simple disrespectful attitudes as key catalysts for turning down offers.

To address the changing market we have to first look at the root cause of the problem. Certainly the economy caused a massive reduction in hiring for several years. These same economics created a more cautious approach to expansion, stop starts on replacements, and a simple fear of the unknown. Most companies across all sectors felt some, if not all, the effects of the economy. More cautious hiring processes created the elongation, but the basic rules of upgrading teams remained. Always be interviewing became a time filler and often a time waster. Leaders in all sectors wanted to hire and expand, but simply did not have the capacity to make that decision quickly. Worse than saying no, they simply made no decision and told no-one.

With less hiring came a lesser need for updating position descriptions, managing change, or at times, even caring what the competition was doing. If you wanted a college educated A or B player there were plenty to choose from. Since there was little being spent on technology upgrades, innovation, training, or other basic fundamental changes to the business, the same old hiring requirements could provide enough information to make a hire.

Well, hasn’t that all changed!
